Who doesn’t love music? You know it’s true – there’s a music lover in all of us!

No matter the type of music you listen to, there is something about it that makes it a special part of our lives.

It isn’t just that music makes us feel good. Yes – we all enjoy dancing and singing along to our favorite tunes. Music also does a lot to help us develop socially.

And this is why music is so important in the lives of our children.

What impact does music have on the development of our children?

Studies have shown that there’s a direct correlation between one’s high academic achievements and his/her exposure to music.

Researchers have found that musical experiences in childhood can accelerate brain development.

It doesn’t sound all that far-fetched, does it? One doesn’t need to research music and its impact on our growth to know how influential it can be.

Just observe an infant and you’ll be able to see how music has already helped him/her to recall information.

Who hasn’t memorized the lyrics to their favorite songs after only a couple of listens? Young children not only know how to recite lyrics and dance along to melodies of songs they’ve heard, but they often communicate through songs they’ve come up with on their own.

Children of all ages are known for expressing themselves through music.

Music doesn’t just help our brains to develop. It’s known for helping us to develop our physical skills as well. This is especially true for those of us who play instruments.

Playing such instruments as the violin, piano, keyboards and drums takes great ability. It demands different actions from your right and left hands simultaneously. The act of playing these instruments has been equated to “patting your head and rubbing your belly at the same time”.

How does summer camp help to foster a child’s love for music?

Simply put, summer camp is a place where children are regularly encouraged to sing and play instruments.

In fact, some songs are uniquely tied to summer camps. Songs such as “99 Bottles Of Beer” are known for their repetitive nature and for being sung during long trips and/or walking through the woods – activities closely associated with the summer camp experience.

Not to mention, singing around the camp fire is as traditional to camp life as roasting marshmallows and telling ghost stories.

However, as much as song and dance is a regular part of summer camps, there are also numerous camps that specialize in music.

Choosing the right music camp for your child requires you to ask yourself a few important questions.

What type of instrument does your child wish to play?

Perhaps, this is the most obvious question to ask.

Naturally, there is a wide variety of musical instruments to choose from.

Determine whether you would like your child to specialize in any one instrument or have the opportunity to try his/her hand at a few.

What is your child’s current level of expertise?

Is your child just starting out? Or has he/she been practicing for quite some time?

Is your child just looking to have some fun? Or does he/she wish to take music seriously in hopes to develop a strong potential career path?

You’ll also want to consider how long of a program you’d like your child to take part in. Serious training requires commitment from both you and your child.

What do you wish for your child to gain from music camp?

As you can imagine, different music camps offer different programs.

In some cases, your child may get private lessons with a specific teacher. In others, he/she may be part of larger classes where kids work together as part of an ensemble.

You may also want your child to learn music theory in addition to learning the instruments themselves.

Maybe, vocals are your child’s thing. Is he/she more of a singer than an instrument-playing musician?

What is the biggest benefit of music-themed summer camps?

Music-themed summer camps are known for instilling confidence in children.

They have been proven to give kids the ability to replace their stage fright with eager anticipation and excitement. Being on stage in front of an audience is no longer a harrowing experience for kids who have attended music camps.

Whether through singing solo on a microphone or sitting alongside band members playing an instrument, music training boosts confidence. The self-assurance gained through music training at summer camp is undoubtedly a huge benefit.

Some would argue that confidence is the greatest gift you can give your child. And we’d find that pretty hard to argue with, especially since parenting experts highly advocate parents to support their children’s passions.

Supporting a child’s passion is listed as a top way to inspire his/her confidence. Therefore, if your son or daughter plays in a band, throw your support behind his/her efforts!

It will go a long way in helping your child to develop into a strong-willed adult with a “can do” attitude.
